What the Brochures Don’t Tell You

At Beth’s Creative Stitchery, we are proud to promote and sell Horn of America cabinets. After selling several other brands in the past, the Horn product is a lot like cream - it keeps rising to the TOP!

Here are several things to consider about sewing cabinets and why Horn of America is such a leader in the sewing machine furniture market.

• Horn cabinets are on the average two inches deeper than most other brands. This allows for more sewing area and leg room.
• If you look inside of the “knee box”(the area your legs fit while at the sewing machine) of a Horn cabinet, you will notice that the support boards are not located near the ground level but almost 8 inches higher. This higher support position allows for more floor space under the cabinet and for limitless location of the foot control and leg extension. On lesser brands of cabinets, the support boards are located near the ground and stick out several inches. This poor location reduces the amount of space under the cabinet. Combine that with the overall narrower depth of the other brands, and it is likely that your foot control will need to sit almost directly under your sewing chair! This is not a comfortable position.
• All of Horn of America cabinets, with exception of the 1010, sit you in front of the needle!!! If you are a serious sewer, never buy a cabinet that sits you directly in front of the machine itself! Proper position puts you in line with your needle.
• No matter how big your sewing cabinet is, it cannot (nor should it) hold your entire sewing room! Your cabinet should hold your machine correctly, position you comfortably, and contain basic notions at your fingertips. It might even hold a place for your serger or have a platform for a small ironing board or cutting mat. You need to move in and out of your cabinet without feeling like you need a crowbar. Avoid cabinets that look more like a storage solution than a work surface.
• A sewing cabinet is not a cutting table. A painful back is the only reward you will get! Cutting tables need to be approximately 35” tall. Sewing cabinets are about 29”. Cutting tables are designed for standing ... sewing cabinets are designed for a sitting position.
• Horn cabinets are made with scratch-resistant melamine and are 5/8” thick. Most other companies use 1/2” material, which can sag over time. The casters are the largest used in the sewing furniture industry. Many finishes are available.
• Horn of America has been the #1 design leader in sewing furniture. All others are copycats or look-alikes.
• Horn of America has replacement parts for all cabinets in case damage does occur, such as in a household move.
