Sewing Boutiques

I began thinking about “sayings” the other day ... like “the grass is always greener,” “don’t put off until tomorrow,” “the bigger, the better!” and the one about lemons. These sayings are often untrue, especially the one about “bigger is better.”

Well, it might be true for print size as we get “aging eyes.” A bigger TV makes sporting events seem like you’re there. I can think of a lot of things that bigger is better, and a lot of things were bigger is NOT always better. Just ask Goldilocks! Super-sized fast food meals also come to mind!

But as I look around at today’s shopping options, I find the bigger the store, the less unique. At mega-marts, customer service is often questionable, or they try to make sales by offering “greeters” at the door, deeply discounted prices, and a location on every corner. Sure, I want my grocery store and drug store to be conveniently located and offer a large selection at a fair price. But, really, I can’t think of a big, multi-location store that truly offers an enjoyable shopping experience.

Instead, my best experiences have come from “boutique” shops that are owner-managed and -run. These owners attempt to impart their vision on every employee ... the product selection is varied and reflects the tastes of the owner and staff ... they don’t try to be everything to everybody. The staff tends to be very product knowledgeable, they personally own the products they sell, they love the products they sell, and they stay focused in their field. These boutiques make me feel like I am a member of a special club, and that what I’m shopping for has a select, unique clientele. I understand it also says something about me as person. It shows I know the difference between “cheap,” good, better, and best. It also says “this is important to me, so I am willing to shop around, drive, and maybe pay a bit more.” Boutique shopping might require my driving across town. I rarely have a need to leave my own neighborhood, so this allows me to broaden my horizons!

Think about your next shopping experience. Do bigger advertising budgets, more locations, and larger stores really add up to an enjoyable shopping experience? Sewing machines, embroidery machines, and sergers are part of that “boutique” experience, and Beth’s Creative Stitchery is your sewing boutique! We won’t be putting up billboards, we won’t be doing full-page ads. Our newsletter is not in color nor corporate made. We have always been the one source for ALL of your sewing questions—heirloom, garment, home decoration, crafting, creative, and quilting ... which reminds me of a saying that IS true: “The cream always rises to the top!”

BCS and Berninas are the cream!

Remember ...
Nothing Sews like a Bernina. Nothing.
