Fee Schedule -
General Basic Service

  • Basic Service (a/k/a COA - cleaning, oiling, adjustments) fee - $70.
  • Super Head Frame Cleaning - $15 to $25 extra.
  • Foot Control Repair - $10 to $20 excluding parts.
  • Free estimates available on miscellaneous mechanical issues.

This is not a full price list, because costs can vary from machine to machine. Most machine service will fall into the above categories.

Super Head Frame Cleaning

Some older and very active machines will benefit from a bit more tender-loving care. A Super Head Frame cleaning allows for deeper cleaning and removal of hard-to-reach thread caught inside of the machine. This extra service is time-consuming and is not part of COA. The service technician will do this advanced service only if it is truly required or if the machine is more than 8-12 years old. All Berninas produced between 1986 and 1998 benefit from this special treatment.

Basic Service - The Hallmark of All Servicing

Most machines usually will need only basic service. Most sewing issues are also addressed, such as thread and/or needle breakage, lack of fabric feed, frozen machines, poor tension, or skipping stitches. For most machines, a basic service includes the following:

  • Covers are removed.
  • Hook areas dismantled and excess thread, lint, and dust packs are removed from machine.
  • Hook and timing pulleys are removed from machine and cleaned.
  • Machine parts are cleaned.
  • Joints and hook area are oiled.
  • Thorough inspection of each part for burrs and needle damage.
  • Inspection of light unit.
  • Inspection for binds.
  • Inspection for proper needle positions.
  • Upper and lower tension adjusted.
  • Total test sew, including straight stitch, zigzag, left/right needle position, width and length control movement, reverse control function, construction stitch and decorative stitch function, multi-motion (stretch stitch) function, and buttonhole, if applicable.
  • Advanced testing on contemporary machines, including speed test, balance, special electronic test, updating firmware.
  • External part of machine is cleaned with an attempt to remove old scuffs and odd residue marks.
  • Grimy power cords and foot controls are generally cleaned.
  • Retiming of the machine.
  • Foot control testing.

Circuit Boards

In this high-tech world, it is only expected that a percentage of circuit board-driven products will fault out. Most sewing machines produced within the last 25 years have some sort of circuit board. Bernina develops its circuit boards to be highly reliable ... and repairable! So, unlike other brands that require you to purchase a new circuit board if one fails, most Bernina circuit boards are sent back to the warehouse where they are repaired on the spot. In most current models, the boards are shipped back to Bernina in Switzerland for a complete overhaul.

So what does that mean to you, the sewing machine owner? Most of the circuit boards in your machine that are likely to cause a bit of grief are also the most expensive ... in the range of $400-$900! At Beth’s Creative Stitchery and Bernina of America, we think it is bad customer service to make a consumer purchase a new expensive circuit board and to add to our land fills. That is why we will never attempt to sell you a new circuit board.

Instead, your old board is replaced with one from our extensive stock. Don’t forget, sewing machines with circuit boards have been around for more than 25 years, the average machine has 2-3 main boards, and there have been more than 40 different Bernina sewing machines in the product line-up, past and present! The price to you, the consumer, averages about $120 to $150, which includes the repair itself and shipping. Lag time for repair is almost nil, because most common boards are kept in stock at Beth’s Creative Stitchery!
