The Other Guys

You’ve seen it. The ad in the phone book or newspaper that they promise to come out to your home and service a machine for $24.99. The most these “other guys” will do is change the needle, correctly thread the machine, clean out from under the feed dogs, adjust the tension, and do a short test sew. Other than adjusting the tension, you can do all these things yourself.

Meanwhile, they are looking for a reason to haul your machine to their basement shop. They might even be looking at you! Does this person look gullible? Does this person look like a potential mark? Will this person pay anything to get their machine back? And, away your machine goes with its mysterious problem!

Two or three days later, you get a call saying your machine is done, and it will cost you $150, and you have to PICK IT UP! When you go to pick up the machine, you will be told a gear-belt-hook-bobbin case-needle bar … needed to be replaced. You never see the replaced part, and if you do, did it really come from YOUR machine? Was the part really replaced? And if you have a high quality machine, how did the “other guys” get the part? If they got a part, they probably paid full retail. That means you paid double for the part!

Our experience has been that these come-to-your-home guys make their money by fraud. Any time a consumer brings a machine to Beth’s Creative Stitchery after it has been held hostage by the “other guys,” we find no servicing has been done and no parts have been replaced. The consumer is almost always upset because they know they have be duped, cause these “other guys” will NOT give back the machine, UNLESS IT’S PAID FOR!

Most of the “problems” that the “other guys” claim the machine has are extremely rare. The “other guys” also have no training on any computer machines or any of the better brands. They are not authorized by any local sewing machine shops or by any major manufacture. They are only able to get basic parts like bobbins, bobbin cases, throat plates, cheap foot controls, and other generic parts. No local shop will sell them any part, at any cost!

Using the “other guys” to service your machine is like taking a BMW into the corner gas station. We believe it should go back to the dealership! They know the product, have the correct parts, and usually are very honest about servicing. Yes, they may be a bit more expensive ... but then, again, it is a BMW!

So, the next time you think it might be faster or cheaper to have someone come to your home, it very well could end up being the most expensive service your machine will ever get.
